What Inspired the Books?
As Loredana tells students during her author visits, every story begins with inspiration from real life.
TO BURP OR NOT TO BURP grew out of her mother's question, "How do they go the bathroom up there?" and her children’s relentless questions about space: What do you eat in space? How do you become an astronaut? Those questions eventually became the four-book Dr. Dave Astronaut Series written with Canadian astronaut Dr. Dave Williams.
KARATE KAKAPO was inspired by watching her daughter struggle to kick a soccer ball. For readers aged 3–8, it’s a story about perseverance, optimism, and what happens when you don't know what to do, but you try anyway.
HOW GOGO FOUND HER GROOVE began when her daughter's classmate announced that she was going to be a "flamingo dancer" for Halloween when she really meant flamenco dancer.
WALTZ OF THE BUTTERFLIES was inspired by a prima ballerina's answer to one simple question, "Do you still get nervous?"
Together, these stories reflect what Loredana hopes to create for children: books that are "good for you" while also saying, "Good for you!" in stories that spark curiosity, build confidence and encourage children to be themselves.
